Can you imagine painting your own ceramic mug while chatting in Spanish with your classmates? That’s exactly what our latest group of international students—mostly from Germany—got to do during their intensive Spanish course in Barcelona. Most of them stayed in student apartments throughout the city and, thanks to our activities, they’ve been able to experience Barcelona to the fullest.
The activity took place at Bescuit, a ceramic studio in the city center, just a short walk from our school. It was one of the many cultural activities we organize to help our students step outside the classroom and dive into Spanish in a fun and creative way.
Because yes—being a Spanish learner in Barcelona also means discovering the city with all your senses.
1. More than just fun
With this kind of activity, our goal is for you to practise the language in real, spontaneous situations that are part of everyday life. At our school, we follow a communicative and cultural approach, because learning Spanish isn’t just about memorising rules and vocabulary—it’s about putting it into practice in meaningful, real-life contexts.
Painting ceramics might not sound like a Spanish class, but trust us—it is! It’s a chance to use what you’ve learned, discover new words, interact with others, and learn Spanish through art, culture, and emotion.
2. Brushes, words and laughter: our workshop at Bescuit
When we arrived at Bescuit Cerámica, they had a lovely space set aside just for our group. The atmosphere was perfect—relaxing music, a wide selection of materials, and plenty of ceramic pieces to choose from.
Never painted before? No worries! This ceramic painting activity is perfect for everyone—no prior experience needed. Just a desire to create and have fun.
The Bescuit team explained everything patiently and clearly:
- We chose a ceramic piece
- We learned different techniques: brush strokes, dots, sponge splashes, lettering with stamps, stripes and patterns with tape…
- We picked our favourite colours
- We cleaned the pieces with a soft brush to prepare them and then…
… it was time to get painting!
Each student let their imagination run wild. Some painted Spanish phrases, others designed the famous Panot tile of Barcelona, and others created a gift for a friend or loved one. Meanwhile, we chatted in Spanish—asking questions, making comments, laughing—and thanks to our in-class prep, many students recognised new words they had just learned.
3. Painting and learning Spanish
Beyond leaving with a personalised ceramic piece, many students told us they walked away with more confidence in their Spanish. “Now I believe more in myself and my Spanish skills. It’s like having superpowers—doing something and speaking a language that isn’t my native one,” one student told us.
In fact, during the ceramic workshop, we strengthened vocabulary in context and practiced listening and speaking skills. These kinds of experiences help create a safe space where you can speak, make mistakes, and try again.
This is the kind of real-world communication that makes the difference between studying a language and living it.
4. Learn Spanish all over Barcelona
In Barcelona, any place can become a classroom. And every activity is a perfect excuse to learn. One of our students told us: “Painting ceramics was one of those cultural experiences where you learn Spanish and unwind at the same time… a bit like going to a yoga class in Barcelona.”
If you’re thinking about coming to the city, picture this: one day you paint a mug, the next you join a guided tour, and then maybe cook paella in Barcelona ([link to article]). And all the while, you’re practicing your Spanish.
At C2 Barcelona, we believe that learning Spanish through real-life contexts is the best way to make it stick forever.
